Description:  India’s national fruit is the mango. The Portuguese introduced the Tamil word for mango to the West, where it is essentially equivalent in all other languages. The fruit is commonly referred to as either manpalam (also written as mambazham for “ripe mango fruit” or mangai for “unripe mango fruit”). The general term for “mango” in Tamil is mamaran. The Portuguese sailors who came across the fruits in markets and harbours are thought to be the ones who coined the term “mangai.” It’s conceivable that at that time, immature mangoes were primarily exchanged. The Sanskrit term “amra,” which is likely also derived from the Tamil word for mango, is where the names for mango in North India come from.
